Happy 175th Birthday Albert County! Today the 8th of August 1845, 175 years ago, Queen Victoria signed into being the County of Albert in the Province of New Brunswick. The photo you see is the petition that brought it about. The Petition was started by James Brewster in November 1840 and was signed by 440 inhabitants of what was to become Albert County. If you can image the work it took to get 440 signatures in 1840 it was quite the undertaking! If you wish to see the rest of signatories of the petition a copy of it will be on display at the Museum! Many family names ring out today in Albert County!

Tomorrow is the big day! The 175 Anniversary of the founding of the county! Here is a photo taken in the Shiretown (the Capital of the County) around 1960. The photo would have been taken from the doorstep of PJ Collins store, which was next to the Tax Office.

Alma is the place to be in the heat of summer. It’s even cooler than Hopewell Cape! Here is a cool photo of Alma Harbour. I can make out the name on the white schooner - Adonis but the tugboat and other schooner are hard to make out. Any ideas?

Now a photo from Hillsborough taken in May 1960. This Freight Train is loaded with gypsum board at one time Albert County Gypsum was considered the best in the world. Notice the marsh land with no trees, it’s amazing how quick they grow here.

Back to work Tuesday, and back to hay season, the work never stops on the farm. Here is an amazing photo of haying on the Shepody marsh ca. 1917.

It’s haying season in Albert County. Did you know marsh hay was one of the biggest exports from Albert County until the dawn of the automobile? Albert County marsh hay sold for top dollar in Europe and the US. it was the best in the world at the time. Here is a great photo of haying on the William West farm about 1908.
