Albert County is lucky to have a reminder of what we can accomplish as a county when we work together. The 1919 Victory Loans gun, which has sat in the Hopewell Cape Square since 1920, was awarded to Albert County for winning the 1919 Victory Loans Competition for tripling our set goal and raising $347,600.00 for the Canadian Government to help bring the boys home. It is a testament to the people who sacrificed and supported our troops during and after the Great War. This photo is circa 1920 when the gun first arrived in Hopewell Cape.

P.S. We searched for photos of the first ceremony at the Alma and Riverside-Albert Cenotaphs but were unable to find any. If you have photos of the first ceremony at each cenotaph please send to ac175@albertcountymuseum.com

Today’s photo is a picture of a Silver Cross which was given to May Joyce of Hopewell Cape, her son Harold George Joyce, 709283 was Killed in Action near the end of war on August 28, 1918. It serves as a poignant reminder that the cost of war is not only felt by the participants but also those they leave behind.

The Silver Cross or as it’s formally known The Memorial Cross, was a gift of Canada and was issued as a memento of personal loss and sacrifice on the part of widows and mothers of Canadian sailors, soldiers and airmen who died for their country during the war.

Harold George Joyce ,709283 was from Hopewell Cape, Albert County, New Brunswick and was born September 4, 1897. He was the son of John E. and May Joyce, of Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick. He enlisted with the 104th Battalion CEF on September 27, 1915. His occupation was listed as a seaman. He was listed as Killed in Action while fighting with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps on August 28, 1918. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Vimy Monument.

This is a photo of the Hillsborough Parish stained glass which used to be in Peck Memorial Hall in Hillsborough. Each of the six parishes in Albert County were represented with their own window, with a unique statement on each. You can click on the link to view the rest. Special thanks to Larry Dickinson of MyNewBrunswick.ca for the use of their photos and for their support.

If you wish to see the stained glass windows in person, then please visit Hillsborough Legion Branch 32.

It’s Remembrance Day, a time for somber reflection and thought. The one day of the year set aside to remember those who came before us, to remember those who paved the way for our peace and prosperity.

The Hillsborough Cenotaph reads. “In grateful remembrance of our comrades who gave their lives for the cause of freedom,” these poignant words, written by the men who returned, serve as a reminder the cost that we as Canadians owe these men. Not just the men who died, but to those men who served and who came back to live their lives and forge our nation.

For us, who are so removed from conflict, owe them all a debt of gratitude that words cannot tell.

At the going down of the sun we will remember them.

This is a photo of the first Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Hillsborough Cenotaph in 1966.

Did you know there are 4 soldiers buried in Albert County who died while on Active Service during the First World War? They are:

Carl Clinton Irving buried in Baltimore Church Cemetery

George LeBrurene Beaumont buried in Edgett’s Landing Green Hill Cemetery

Royden Edmund Steeves buried in Hillsborough Grey’s Island Cemetery

Harold Guy Turner buried in Baltimore Church Cemetery

There are also a number of memorial tombstones dedicated to soldiers who died while serving overseas scattered across the county. This Remembrance Day when you gather your poppy cross from the Legion or if you feel uncomfortable attending one of the services across the county, a trip to one of these gravesites to pay remembrance might be an idea.

This photo shows the Baltimore Church Cemetery where two of our boys are buried.

It’s Remembrance Week at photo-a-day. This is a shot of Peck Memorial Hall in Hillsborough. It was the first such memorial hall build in Canada in memory of a solder killed in the Great War. This photo dates from 1925.

On October 30, 1917 the First World War battle of Passchendaele claimed the life of Lieut. George Bishop Peck. Before the battle Lieut. Peck wrote to his father requesting, in the event of his death, that his share of the family’s fortune be used for the benefit of the whole community, particularly the young people of Albert County. His father was Mr. John L. Peck, local bank owner and member of the Provincial Legislature who was involved in manufacturing and mercantile concerns. On November 30, 1921 Lieut. Peck’s last request was realized when this building was dedicated to the memory of fallen heroes of Albert County. His father, who had financed the cost of construction, deeded ownership of the Hall over to the people of the county.

It’s covered Bridge Week at the AC175 Photo-A-Day! This is a great shot of the Peter Jonah Covered Bridge over Turtle Creek. This photo was taken September 9, 1961 by Florence K. Daly. The stonework leading up to the bridge is remarkable.
